Your Patrons Need Diverse Books: Developing Latinx-Inclusive Library Collections
What story does your library tell through its collection and programs? We live in a diverse world, but the publishing industry does not reflect this reality. In honor of OLA's Mock Pura Belpre workshop, the presenters will focus on collecting and showcasing materials that "portray, affirm, and celebrate" Latinx lives. The presenters will share their experiences championing diversity at small public and school libraries and provide attendees with tips on seeking, evaluating, and promoting Latinx-inclusive materials for all ages in libraries of any size.
Panel:
Elena Gleason is Acquisitions Librarian at the Coos Bay Public Library, where she selects all materials for adults. She also runs the library's Your Book of the Month personalized readers' advisory service.
Lora Worden is the School Library Assistant at Catlin Gabel School in Portland, where she assists with selecting and promoting materials for students in preK-5th grade as well as their caregivers and educators.
Katy Bogart is the Youth Services Librarian at Garden Home Community Library in SW Portland, a member of WCCLS. She is responsible for acquisitions, collection development, and programming for youth and families.
